The personnel who provide support to the Landuse/Land Cover Change Research Thrust are as follows:

  • Post-Doctorate Associate

  • Graduate Assistant

  • Research Associate ( Undergraduate )

A detailed job description for each is attached to this e-mail. To follow is a discussion of the research support that each of the above personnel provides.


 GRADUATE ASSISTANT

The student selected for this position works directly with the Research Thrust Lead. He or she is required to work a minimum of 10 hours per week in the CCZARS Computer Lab located in the P.B.S. Pinchback Engineering Building during the semester. In addition, the Graduate Assistant is required to take the Introduction to GIS course offered by Dr. Fulbert Namwamba, who works for the Urban Forestry Program. The Graduate Assistant also provides GIS Technology support to students who are enrolled in Dr. Lionel D. Lyles¡¦ Principles of Geography course. After undergraduate students are taught GIS, Dr. Lyles assign them research projects. The Graduate Assistant provides technical research support to these students when they go to the Computer Lab to work on their assigned research projects. Also, the Graduate Assistant provides academic support to Dr. Lyles¡¦ GIS unit, which he teaches each semester as part of his undergraduate course.

Moreover, the Graduate Assistant is expected to support the Research Lead with the completion of specific research projects related to Landuse/Land Cover Change. Such tasks as preparing data for analysis and processing map output are some of the tasks the Graduate Assistant performs. Finally, the Graduate Assistant, during the course of his or her training, identifies a research topic to work on to complete a thesis, leading to the completion of a Masters Degree program.

Todate, one Graduate Assistant has been awarded his Masters Degree, and a second one is currently nearing the completion of a Masters Program.


RESEARCH ASSOCIATE ( UNDERGRADUATE )

The Research Associate serves in this position as a CCZARS Scholar. Two CCZARS Scholars are assigned to work with the Landuse/Land Cover Change component. Each CCZARS Scholar is required to take the Introduction to GIS course; they also provide data management and manipulation support. In addition, they work with the Research Thrust Lead on various on-going research projects related to Louisiana Coastal erosion. The CCZARS Scholars are also urged to use their CCZARS training to further their advancement in their chosen fields of study.
